Cannes Picturehouse, Element Snares Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Lobster’ In U.K., Ireland

Element Pictures Distribution and Picturehouse Entertainment have made a joint acquisition of the rights to Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster” which is set to stage its worldwide premiere at the annual Cannes Film Festival.

“The Lobster”, which is Lanthimos’ first English language film, will star well-known stars such as Colin Farrell, Lea Seydous and Rachel Weisz.

Lanthimos, who has received a lot of praise for his film “Dogtooth”, will have his film debut in Ireland and the U.K. this fall.

Other stars which also star in the film, which is blackly a funny love story that is set in a near future, will also star Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman and John C.Reilly.

Claire Binns, the director of programming and acquisitions for Picturehouse Entertainment, revealed that, “I’m delighted we have an opportunity to work on this innovative and truly original film. I’ve wanted to work with Yorgos since having my head thoroughly scrambled by ‘Dogtooth’ in Cannes six years ago. The fact this is the first film Picturehouse Entertainment have gone into Cannes competition with makes it that much more special. Believe the hype: It’s an extraordinary film.”

At script stage, “The Lobster” was acquired by Picturehouse Entertainment and Element Pictures Distribution, that said the film is set to be released as a joint venture between both Picturehouse Entertainment and Element Pictures Distribution. This is the first time that the two companies have come together to work on a particular project.
